What this solves
Namibia is bigger than France and has fewer fuel stations than a medium-sized French city. The country is fuel-secure for any sensible route — but several famous routes have stretches of 200+ km with no fuel at all, and self-drivers routinely underestimate this. The most photographed example is the D2624 between Sesriem and Walvis Bay via Solitaire: Solitaire is the only fuel station for 240 km in either direction. Miss it and you walk.
This tool takes your route and starting fuel — and returns the longest gap between stations, recommended fill points, and the exact stretches where one missed pump puts you on foot.
The single biggest insight: every critical gap in Namibia has a town at one end, and many towns have only one station that closes early or on Sundays. Plan to fill before noon, and check that the destination station will be open when you arrive.

How to read the results
- Distance is road distance, not straight-line. Mountain passes and gravel detours add 10-30%. Plan for the longer number.
- Range is conservative. A 80L tank in a 4x4 on gravel actually does 600 km in good conditions. On deep sand, expect 350-400 km. The gap is your real worst case.
- Sundays reduce some stations. Some smaller stations close early. The decoder flags this.
- Critical gap > range = danger. Critical gap within range is workable if you start full. Always start full from a known station.
Limitations
- Station hours are approximate. Small-town stations may close 17:00 or 18:00 without notice. Larger ones usually open until 19:00.
- This tool does not model road closures. The D2624 is occasionally closed for grading (rare); check the Namibian Roads Authority before leaving.
- The decoder assumes good conditions. Headwind, soft sand, and overloaded vehicles can drop range by 30-40%.
- Card acceptance is intermittent at small stations. Bring cash (NAD) as backup. Most stations accept Visa/Mastercard but signal can be weak.
- Some fuel stops are cafés and farms, not 24h stations. Don't plan a 22:00 fill at a remote farm stop.
FAQ
What fuel is most common in Namibia?
Diesel (50ppm) is standard for 4x4 rentals. Petrol is also available at every major station. Diesel 50ppm is required for most modern 4x4s. Pump price as of mid-2026 is approximately N$22-25/L for diesel.
Are jerry cans allowed?
Yes — most rentals provide 20L jerry cans. Some airlines forbid empty jerry cans in checked luggage (residual fuel smell). Buy in Windhoek or Swakopmund.
What happens if I run out of fuel?
You walk. The nearest station is rarely closer than 30 km on foot in remote areas. Carry water for 24 hours. Cell signal may not reach your stuck location — inform someone of your route and ETA.
Are there 24-hour fuel stations?
Only in Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, and Oshakati. Every small town station closes. Don't plan a 21:00 fill at Solitaire — it's a one-pump farm.

About this tool
What it is: a route planner that identifies the longest fuel gap on a Namibian self-drive route, with critical vs workable distinction.
Who it's for: self-drivers planning a 7-14 day Namibia loop and want to know exactly where the dangerous stretches are before committing.
Who it isn't for: visitors on guided tours with no fuel responsibility. The driver does this for you.
Limitations: covered above. Station hours, road closures, weather, and range estimates are all approximate.
